Marcel Carné

Port of Shadows, Hôtel du Nord, Children of Paradise... Marcel Carné contributed some of his most successful films to cinema and invented poetic realism with Jacques Prévert. A filmography where we come across Jean Gabin, Michèle Morgan, Louis Jouvet, Arletty, Simone Signoret, then rediscover Jacques Brel, Annie Girardot or Maurice Ronet.

The open-air cafés of Nogent, on the banks of the Marne- the French enjoying life... In this first film by Marcel Carné, just 23, we can already sense the humanistic and social fiber that would later characterize his work.

Bizarre, Bizarre (Drôle de drame, 1937, 1h34)
London, 1900. A bishop (Louis Jouvet) denounces the immorality of certain novels, including one by the mysterious Felix Chapel (Michel Simon)... Featuring some misunderstandings in London's high society, a zany comedy that experienced post-war success.

A deserter (Jean Gabin) falls in love with an orphan (Michèle Morgan) under the supposedly protective gaze of a strange guardian, Zabel (Michel Simon)... A film of an inimitable atmosphere, which put Marcel Carné squarely on the cinema map.

Hôtel du Nord (1938, 1h35)
A couple has decided to end their lives and rents a room in a family hotel on the Canal Saint-Martin... A portrait of the common lower class people of Paris of the 1930s, mixed with dark realism and impossible love, transcended by Louis Jouvet and Arletty.

Daybreak (Le Jour se lève, 1939, 1h33)
François (Jean Gabin) kills Valentin (Jules Berry) in a brawl and hides outvin his room. Surrounded by the police, he recalls his love affair with Françoise... The first French film to feature the flashback, Daybreak would foreshadow American films noirs.

A businessman (Jean Gabin) accompanies his mistress Odile to her father's funeral. There he meets her 18 year-old sister Marie (Nicole Courcel), and falls in love with her... According to Bernard Chardère this film was "The Carné of connoisseurs."

A man arrested by the police dies during his interrogation. His widow files a complaint and the judge Level (Jacques Brel) is in charge of the matter... Here, Carné tactfully deals with the standoff between strength and the law.
